The story follows Guan, a lawyer, whose life takes an unexpected turn when his wife loses her life in a random act of violence. Guan unexpectedly discovers a half-finished novel left by his wife, which is about the story of the endangered Formosan clouded leopard. He never knew his wife could write novels, nor did he understand the mountains of Taiwan. This leads him to set out on a journey to find the leopard and form a strong connection with it.
