Discenza's territory is that of McLuhan, Baudrillard and TV Week, the back and forth game of chasing the Real, trying to figure, define or disguise the line that separates the representations and repetitions of mass media information from the individual's subjective experience of the world... Suspension illustrates the breadth of references and sensibilities operating in effective advertising and mass media imagery: the subtle ways viewers' attention is attracted, held and directed. Suspension doesn't comment directly on the idea of the supermodel, but it does show how easily even the most manipulated and stylized image can activate the longing to discover a human narrative, and set in play — despite the viewers' sense of themselves as being beyond media manipulation — a gut-level desire to connect, to connect to that perfect face, that entity that they desire so intensely, like a perfect memory that they're always just a blink away from recalling and capturing.
