A collaboration between a filmmaker (Meredith Leich) and a glaciologist (Andrew Malone), Scaling Quelccaya weaves together two distant places: the melting Quelccaya glacier in Peru and the city of Chicago. As the world’s largest tropical glacier, Quelccaya and its rapid retreat is currently studied by scientists around the world. Using 3D animation, satellite imagery, archival NASA footage, and speculative math, this short “docufantasy” film tells a visual story of how scientists observe our changes to our climate, expanding into a surreal, animated meditation on the future of our interconnected world.
