This project emerges from a profound investigation into a vacant lot adjacent to the artist’s residence in São Paulo, Brazil, undertaken during the tumultuous period of March 2020 to May 2021, encapsulating the experience of the pandemic. More than merely an empty space, this lot represents a vital crack in the urban fabric—a sanctuary where the artist cultivates not only flora but also connections, sustenance, and narratives that bring the space to life.

The artwork transcends the physical dimensions of the lot, exploring the intricate possibilities and constraints of language itself. Visually, the artist deliberately eschews the precision of traditional photography and video, questioning the triumphalist narratives often present in image production and challenging notions of transparency. Instead, she adopts the pinhole technique, merging it with digital elements to create a synthesis that invites viewers to engage with the layered reality of the garden. This method reflects a desire to access and articulate the myriad stories and experiences embedded within this urban oasis, ultimately offering a transformative lens through which to perceive the garden and the endless possibilities it unlocks.

“Breath” is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of place—an invitation to explore the intersections of nature and urbanity, connection and isolation, and the stories that flourish in the spaces we often overlook.
