Queen of the South is an experimental documentary that explores why a group of residents in Brixton, South London, felt compelled to save the Brixton Recreation Centre (The Rec) from demolition by Lambeth Council and block their plans to build new flats. A post-war British architecture created by the late George Finch and others in the 1970s, the Rec was designed to meet the needs of the working-class people of Brixton. Working with archival material, the documentary features several of George Finch's architectural drawings and illustrations, layering these with 16mm experimental animation and live action footage to draw the audience into the history of the building as it intersects with the science of architecture, art, memory, and community spirit.
