In Cao Fei: OZ (New Humans Version), Cao Fei presents a tentacled humanoid drifting through a speculative digital landscape. Rather than imagining artificial intelligence as a threat, the work envisions a future in which human, machine, and virtual life become inseparable. The figure appears both alien and familiar, embodying a new form of being shaped by memory, technology, and the porous boundaries between physical and digital existence. Featured in the exhibition New Humans: Memories of the Future at the New Museum, the piece reflects on how humanity may evolve alongside increasingly intelligent and immersive technologies.
