Motherland is a short science fiction meditation told through a futuristic present and memories starring an immigrant family non-actors. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic future, where a migrant latinx man is on life support from the last plant on Earth. With only memories of his mother to guide him, he must find a way to preserve life on Earth. It is a film about the displacement one feels when one is uprooted from their homeland and how intergenerational knowledge of plants and botany can sustain us in the face of environmental degradation, loss of culture and indigenous knowledge, western imperialsm empire, climate change.
