KVIFF has adopted a resolution that the fest can’t go ahead without a film by John Cassavetes, hence Love Streams. The last writer/director picture by the king among independent filmmakers tells of an ageing bon vivant and best-selling romance novelist, Robert (Cassavetes), and his emotionally unstable sister Sarah (Gena Rowlands), who meet up after years apart. “Love is a stream. It’s continuous, it doesn’t stop,” states this delightfully eccentric woman going through complex proceedings with her ex-husband (Seymour Cassel) for custody of their daughter. We just can't hide from Cassavetes’ brutally authentic and incisive x-rays of human interaction. Their evolution is unpredictable, surprising us every time by simply being different from the rest of cinematic endeavour.
