The Spanish language title for Omar Zuniga’s debut feature (Los fuertes) could also be translated as “The Forts”, and indeed colonial fortifications crop up in this gay love story set in a foggy Chilean fishing village. Lucas (Samuel Gonzalez) is visiting his sister for a few days before relocating to Montreal. But a chance encounter with local fisherman Antonio (Antonio Altamirano) quickly escalates from flirtation to full blown affair. Zuniga roots his film in unforced naturalism and dramatic conflicts emerge subtly from the situation… Homophobia, for example, is part of the general climate, but Lucas and Antonio are able to chart their own course – together or apart.
