Songs of whales, bird calls of Cory’s shearwaters, transatlantic letters, radio signals. The short film Water Tongue reflects on the many so-called “more-than-human” forms of communication on Earth. Mariana, who is Azorean, and Stella, who is in Lisbon, communicated over long distance, having later traveled and filmed together in the Azorean Archipelago. Across the distance between the islands and Lisbon, they created a voice-over dialogue. Their reflections unfold as a kind of ‘road movie’ through the archipelago, forming a more-than-human polyphonic orchestra where human and non-human voices share an equal stage.
