Meet Moshi, a Chenchu tribal who used to hunt small game, but Santosh, our Lead Field Conservationist, recently harnessed Moshi and his community's trust to help monitor and protect fishing cats. Santosh was surprised by the Chenchus' expertise in tracking animals and their knowledge about animal behavior and natural landscapes. Over the last 6-8 months, while building trust and understanding, Santosh took Moshi to detect and track fishing cats in a small ~2 sq km undesignated mangrove patch in coastal Andhra Pradesh, South India. Here are the surprising results they got, along with Moshi's (and his family's) pledge to not hunt fishing cats in these mangroves. Moshi now helps Santosh, and the FCC set up and monitor wildlife cameras in these last remaining mangroves.
