For this piece, Okón convinced both a McDonald's manager to let him use the restaurant as a set for an entire night and a customer to participate as a model. In this work, the location itself acquires symbolic weight. In other words, McDonald's, as a representative of the corporate model, becomes the content itself.
Furthermore, the piece refers to the way in which the body is framed, and above all, dehumanized by this context. That is, it refers to the way in which corporate culture and consumer society alienate our bodies. The obese body, in this sense, becomes the physical evidence of a neoliberal system whose ideology promotes a model of freedom based on excessive consumption and low self-esteem. It is ironic, then, that in the name of freedom we are prisoners of our own bodies.
Freedom Fries talks about the consequences of an economic and political system that has eroded our agency to such a degree that we have already lost control of our bodies.
