In the rupestrian fields, where vegetation can grow over rocks or sand, plants use specialized strategies to absorb the scarce nutrients. A biologist from State University of Campinas, in Brazil, has been discovering some of those strategies, like specialized structures in roots that secrete a substance capable of releasing the phosphor in the soil. Other plants kkep their leaves buried in the sand and capture little worms.
