In the early days of the internet, cyberspace was primarily defined by men. This work by designer and tech expert Mindy Seu brings to light the origins and extensive legacy of cyberfeminism, not by defining it, but by showing and celebrating it.

The index is a catalog of expressions of feminist online tech activism of the past 30 years, including feminist internet art, new media art, a survey of digital rights activists, and excerpts from scientific articles. The installation consists of a paper copy of Seu’s Cyberfeminism Index enriched with augmented reality. Browse the book, activate the augmented reality and watch the corresponding videos and images on the screen in front of you. One article naturally leads to another, as the book is full of analogue hyperlinks that refer to other articles in the index.

Seu has thus created an overview of the ways that women and marginalized groups have given shape to cyberspace—from utopia to dystopia. It’s both an indispensable introduction for the layperson and a surprising source for the expert.
