Growing up in a rural village in India, at twelve years old, Nirmal flees to Canada amid the chaos of the Partition of India. He’s never been out of his village before nor on a plane. Though it crashes during take-off, and they must reset the plane, he arrives safely. Meeting his father for the first time ever, on the tarmac. His father quickly demands the removal of his turban, his hair, and, with them, his identity as he knows it. What follows is a day of assimilation: convinced with a western film, a leather jacket, and a switchblade, Nirmal’s turban/hair are traded/lost. Nirmal is left to process a world that no longer feels familiar. Narrated by Nirmal, my grandfather, and built from abstract, non-literal imagery, this film explores the psychological cost of displacement on a child. Beneath the surface of immigration lies cultural erasure, fractured identity, and a boy’s early education in masculinity, displacement, and survival.
