How do we reach beyond the bubble of the human experience? Are language and consciousness uniquely human? Scientists, philosophers and artists have been probing these questions for generations. Between Minds is a documentary that illuminates the ideas and experiences of people working in the field of interspecies communication – between humans and other living beings. Exploring the history, culture and aspirations of this vibrant community is an epic and kaleidoscopic journey into the very foundations of life and existence. The film features a host of fascinating characters, and traces the history of interspecies communication research back to its roots in the US during the Cold War. We meet scientist David Gruber from the Cetacean Translation Initiative (CETI) who is now using AI and machine learning to decode the communication of sperm whales. Eminent Astronomer Frank Drake tells us of his lifelong quest for extraterrestrial intelligence, and describes the feelings he had when he believed he had truly made first contact. Musician and occultist Genesis P. Orridge shares their philosophy on bridging the human-animal consciousness divide. As we dive into existential questions with all of these fascinating thinkers, psychonauts and researchers, the film increasingly becomes experimental in form, taking us on an audio-visual journey, encouraging the viewer to reflect upon the boundaries of human-ness. As these fearless explorers venture into the metaphysical spaces that lie in between human minds and the minds of other species, what can we ultimately learn about ourselves?
