Aquatocene / The subaquatic quest for serenity is an ongoing sound art project by Robertina Šebjanič, which investigates the phenomenon of human-generated underwater noise pollution in the world’s oceans and seas.
The work presented here is Aquatocene – 60°24’49.2″N 5°16’54.9″E _North Sea – Bergen (NO)
Over the last few years Robertina has made a number of recordings using hydrophones in different locations around the globe. Underwater noise effects a great number of marine life forms which depend on the sub-aquatic sonic environment to survive.
Through audio compositions of subaquatic soundscape, the artist reflects upon the anthropogenic sonic impact on the underwater habitats and marine wildlife, raises awareness and underscores the importance of preserving safe sound environments for species inhabiting world waters. Aquatocene project ultimately calls for empathy, awareness, and responsibility. As we expand our technological reach into aquatic environments, we must also cultivate a deeper understanding of their fragility. Only by listening; literally and metaphorically, can we begin to imagine a more balanced coexistence with marine life.
In the words of the artist Robertina Šebjanič
“With Aquatocene, I seek to make audible the invisible pollution of underwater soundscapes and reflect on how human presence profoundly affects marine life. What began as an attempt to capture the serenity of aquatic environments soon revealed a sonic landscape dominated by human-made noise. Marine life cannot close its ears to this intrusion, the creatures of the sea are immersed in our soundscape, whether they want to be or not. To truly understand the aquatic world, we must learn to listen, not only with our ears, but with empathy and responsibility. Our technological presence is not only visible on the surface, it resonates deep within the oceans, reshaping the sonic realities of marine ecosystems and challenging us to reconsider the impact of our existence below the waves.”
"We live in the period of Anthropocene where humans are consistently “terraforming” the land and “aquaforming” the waters. The environmental issues that we are facing are a complex combination of socio-political and economic relationships. Empathy and solidarity towards the environment are key ingredients for how to change them."
