A Story about Yamaguchi Boy(2025) is a short video inspired by the artist’s father’s migration journey, exploring the history of urban migration in Shenzhen, China, through the lens of a laborer named Yamaguchi Boy. Once a small fishing town, Shenzhen has rapidly transformed into a megacity, built by rural migrants who remain socially invisible despite shaping its growth. The video unfolds in five chapters, incorporating interviews, archival photographs, and semi-fictional storytelling to narrate Yamaguchi Boy’s memories, struggles, and transgenerational trauma. Using video footage, scanned family archives, and visual effects that evoke obsolescence and metamorphosis, the video reflects on migration, resilience, and the emotional toll of urban change. The film is presented with captions instead of voiceover, manifesting a sense of distance and not belonging.
