I worked on scratching and distressing 13 strips of 8mm film (at varying lengths) both on their base and emulsion sides over the course of a year, before splicing them all together. 515 is related to themes of numerology, synchronicity in the Jungian sense, degradation over time and through media transference, fragility, redefinition of beauty, and this almost narrative-like notion of cross the threshold of the conscious mind into the unconscious. The subject matter is the materiality of the film itself as an ephemeral physical artifact, which is in tension with its visually degraded and infinitely reproducible form as a digital scan. This particular scan is the most recent state of the film, allowing it to have accrued more dust and have worn out more through continual projections and handling.
