The presence of the German word Schatzi (‘darling’) in the title, and the initial display of highly formalistic film techniques, are designed to deliberately mislead the innocent viewer. At first, this silent film by the structural master Kurt Kren seems devoted to showing the material deformations and distortions of a barely legible image: scratches, light flares, blur and black frames rule. Gradually, something more representational will become evident to your eye – something intended to shock.
