About

John A. Burt is an Associate Professor of Biology and head of the Environmental Studies program at NYU Abu Dhabi. Burt's research focuses on the Persian/Arabian Gulf, the world's hottest sea, as a means to understand how marine organisms cope with and respond to extreme temperatures, and to gain insights into what this means as the world's seas continue to warm under climate change. Burt primarily studies coral reefs (including their fishes), but also works on mangrove and seagrass ecosystems. He was awarded the 2022 Transformative Research Award at NYU Abu Dhabi and has published over 125 scholarly articles in world class journals including Science Advances, Nature Climate Change, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and many others.
